The court file will hold the will, petition for probate, letters of authority, inventories, accountings, and closing orders. All of this falls under Michigan's EPIC law at MCL 700.1101. The law sets out how estates, trusts, and guardianships work across the state.
Guardianship and conservatorship cases are also filed in Cass County probate court. A guardianship petition asks the court to appoint someone to care for a minor or an incapacitated adult. The file has the petition, medical reports, bond documents, and court orders. Conservatorship cases deal with managing another person's finances. MCL 700.1302 gives the probate court exclusive jurisdiction over these matters.
Small estates worth $15,000 or less can use a simplified process under MCL 700.3982. The heir files an affidavit and skips formal probate entirely. This is quicker and cheaper than opening a full case.
